Although this part of the river is technically called Hooghly, everybody simply calls it Ganga. It splits the urban area into two cities, Howrah and Kolkata. Kolkata was the capital of India under british rule until 1911. Most of the statues of british rulers and traders have since been replaced by Bose, Indira Ghandi and Ambedkar but the traces of colonization are still more visually apparent here than anywhere else in india: the Howrah bridge towering over the city, the old Morris Oxford based taxis and the factories and warehouses build by British East India Company along Ganga.
